Milwaukee Brewers select Colton Cross in 31st round

Colton Cross became the 18th player in the history of Shorter University baseball to be drafted when the Milwaukee Brewers selected him 931st overall in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft's 31st round.

Cross, a right-handed pitcher from Ringgold, Ga. played two years for the Hawks after transferring from Kennesaw State University prior to his junior year. In two seasons with Shorter, Cross appeared in 25 games, making 24 starts, and throwing five complete games. Over 144.1 innings he allowed 136 hits, walked 67, and struck out 108; while only allowing three homeruns over that span. With a career ERA of 3.68, he allowed 59 earned runs through two seasons, and held opponents to a .243 average.

"Colton is so deserving of this opportunity," former Shorter head coach Matt Larry says. "He's a guy who understands that very few players get the chance to play professionally. I'm so proud for him and his family, and know that he will continue to be successful at the next level of his baseball career.

The selection marks the first MLB draft pick for the Hawks since Ryan Newell was taken in the seventh round of the 2012 draft by the Miami Marlins. Newell is currently pitching for the Jupiter Hammerheads.
