ROME -- The Hawks are headed to the semifinals!
With the game scoreless at the break, No. 4 seed Shorter (8-9-1, 5-4 GSC) kicked into gear; tallying four goals to top fifth seeded West Florida (6-5-2, 4-4-1 GSC) 4-0 at home.
Irvin Espinal had a career day for the Hawks in the win; finding a piece of three of Shorter goals. He headed in what would prove to be the game winner in the 58th minute on a free kick from
Fernando De Barros to break the stalemate and give the Hawks the lead 1-0. Twelve minutes later he added an assist on
Matt Goss' second goal of the season, giving Shorter the 2-0 advantage. And, in the 73rd minute came through again, netting a pass from
Pierre Lepage to make it a 3-0 game.
Christopher Cummins entered for Espinal late in the second frame, tallying a goal of his own on penalty kick at the 82:54 mark.
Shorter outshot the Argos 23-13, and held the advantage 13-8 in shots on goal.
Nicolas Ferrigno tallied the win for the Hawks, making 8 saves in 90 minutes of play for his fourth clean sheet of the season. West Florida goalkeeper, Andre Moreira, recorded the loss; making 9 saves in a complete game performance.
Shorter will make the trip to Pensacola, Fla. Friday to take on top-seeded Christian Brothers. Game time is set for 8:00pm eastern/7:00pm central. In the last meeting of the teams, the Bucs topped the Hawks 3-0.
