ROME — The Shorter University women's cross country team took home first place in Saturday's 12k Tempo race in Rome in the final preparation for this weekend’s Southern States Athletic Conference Championships.

The Lady Hawks totaled 24 points to beat out Berry College's Lady Vikings by 11 points for the event title.

Shorter's Sarah Massey crossed the finish line first for Shorter, taking second overall with a time of 23:51, followed by Shea Spicher in third place with a time of 26:14.

Rachel McDaniel returned from injury and finished fifth overall. She completed the course in 26:17 and her return was welcomed by Shorter head coach Jay Stephenson.

"We are really glad to have her back," said Stephenson.

"This was a tune up race for us,” Stephenson added. “I think we are really ready to run well at conference championships this weekend.”

The Lady Hawks, who are favorite to capture the SSAC title in Jackson, Miss., on Nov. 5, averaged a time of 25:50 on the 6k course with a total time of 2 hours and 9 minutes.
