Shorter women’s harriers finish 8th at Southeast XC Classic

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Shorter University women's cross country team laced up and toed the line once again on Saturday in the Southeast Cross Country Classic hosted by Berry College.

The Lady Hawks, favorites to win the Southern States Athletic Conference championship in several weeks, looked strong on their way to an eighth place finish in a field of 35 teams.

Out of 310 total runners, Shorter's Sarah Massey crossed the finish line fourth overall with a time of 18:23 on the 5k course. She was followed by sophomore Shea Spicher, who took 15th overall in a time of 18:56.

Katie Rutledge completed the course in a personal best time of 19:43 and Emma DeBeaucoudrey crossed the line in 20:56.

The team combined for a total time of 1 hour, 39 minutes and averaged 19:48 on the course. The Lady Hawks beat out cross town rival and event host Berry by 52 points. Shorter also bested Bryan College and its SSAC rival, Lee University.

The women return to action on Oct. 29 at the 12k Tempo in Rome.
