By Blair Hooper
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Shorter University women's cross country squad secured 27th place out of 32 teams in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Shorter sent seven competitors to the event to race against several NCAA Division I teams including Oklahoma State, Louisiana State, and host Arkansas. This was the first ever 6k race for the Shorter women as they begin the transition into the NCAA 6k distance that they will be competing in next year at the Division II level.
Sarah Massey crossed the finish line first for Shorter, turning in a time of 22:17 to place 83rd overall. Sophomore Shea Spicher came in next for the Lady Hawks, recording a time of 23:24 to secure 149th overall. The team averaged 24:31 for the event.
Shorter beat the only other NAIA school to attend the event, Oklahoma Christian, by 47 points.
"We averaged the same times that we were in the 5k events, so that is good," said Shorter head coach Jay Stephenson.
The Lady Hawks return home for the Southeast Classic in Mount Berry, Ga., on Saturday, Oct. 22.
