MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. -- The Shorter University volleyball squad opens its 2011 season this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27, when it competes in the Milligan Mountain Madness Invitational hosted by Milligan College in Milligan College, Tenn. The Lady Hawks, coming off a 26-6 campaign in 2010, will play four matches as part of the invitational, squaring off with Indiana-Southeast and host Milligan on Friday before closing out the tournament on Saturday with matches against Union (Tenn.) and Freed Hardeman.
ALL-TIME
SERIES
This weekend's meeting between Shorter and Indiana-Southeast is
the first between those schools, however, Shorter has previous
experience matching up with Milligan, Union (Tenn.) and Freed
Hardeman. The Lady Hawks are 2-0 all-time against Milligan, 0-1
all-time against Union (Tenn.) and 1-2 all-time against Freed
Hardeman, which received 37 votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25
Coaches Poll.
HOME AWAY FROM
HOME
The Lady Hawks should feel quite comfortable opening the 2011
season in Milligan College, Tenn. Shorter started off the 2010
season with four straight wins at the Milligan Mountain Madness
Invitational, a streak that ignited a run of 17 wins in its first
18 matches and included a school-record 13-match winning
streak.
NEW LOOK
HAWKS
Shorter volleyball fans may have to re-familiarize themselves with
the Lady Hawks after the departure of five seniors from the 2010
squad. While two-time SSAC Setter of the Year Jordan Corder,
two-time All-SSAC selection Loren Olive and seasoned veteran Meghan
Weller return to the court, all three do so surrounded by a
relatively unknown cast of characters that will see their first
extensive action in a Shorter uniform this season.
RECORD WITHIN
REACH
Junior Loren Olive has an outside chance at becoming Shorter's
all-time leader in service aces. Olive currently ranks third on
Shorter's all-time aces list with 102 in her first two seasons.
Currently, Olive stands 61 aces behind former Lady Hawks' standout
Katie Van Hofwegen, who ended her career last season with the
record of 163 aces. Olive is certainly capable of reaching or
exceeding that number this season -- Olive's 61 aces last season
are the second-highest ace total in school history and another
performance like that one in 2011 would tie her with Van
Hofwegen.
150 ON THE
HORIZON?
Head coach Jon Moseley ended 2010 with 116 career victories at
Shorter, leaving him 34 wins shy of 150 for his career. He won his
100th career collegiate match on Sept. 17, 2010 as his Lady Hawks
topped Brenau, and with a record-setting season, Moseley could
sniff 150 as early as this season.
