Volleyball advances to SSAC semis with 3-0 win over Mobile
GULFPORT, Miss. - Loren Olive had 10 kills, 10 digs and two aces to power Shorter University, the No. 2 seed out of the East Division, to a 25-20, 30-28, 25-18 victory over West Division third-seed University of Mobile in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Southern States Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Friday night.
The Lady Hawks (26-5) advance to take on West Division top-seed Spring Hill College (26-4) in tomorrow afternoon's semifinals at 1:30 p.m. ET. Spring Hill reached the semis with a straight set victory over Columbia College, and will look to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Lady Hawks earlier this season during the SSAC Cross-Over in Montgomery, Ala.
Shorter appeared to be in top form as it eyes its first SSAC Tournament title since 2007.
Ashley Walton added a team-high 11 kills and Jordan Corder dished out 34 assists for the Lady Hawks, who put a stranglehold on the match with a marathon 30-28 win in game two.
To get the game two win, Shorter had to survive a pair of set points and was granted new life on a Mobile service error and attacking error that tied the game at 24-all.
Shorter took a 25-24 lead on another Lady Rams' error and Mobile then battled through four set points before a Jessica Cooper kill and Walton block on back-to-back points closed out the game and put the Lady Hawks up 2-0 in the match.
The Lady Hawks used the momentum from its game two win to race out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and never looked back in earning a second win over the Lady Rams this season.
Ashlie Stewartson added nine kills and Cooper finished with five. Katie Van Hofwegen led all players with 14 digs and Loni Beth Jones chipped in with five digs and an ace.
