Shorter Volleyball Game Notes

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Shorter University volleyball squad will seek out a fifth straight victory to open the 2010 season when it heads to Cleveland, Tenn., for a 7 p.m. match with defending Southern States Athletic Conference champion and No. 4-ranked Lee University on Wednesday, Sept. 1.

The Lady Hawks (4-0), winners of the Milligan Mountain Madness Invitational last weekend, are in the midst of their best start under fifth-year head coach Jon Moseley.

Lee (5-0) reached the Final Four of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship last season and have won the past two SSAC Tournament titles. The Lady Flames are 15-2 all-time against Shorter and have won seven straight in the series, including a marathon five-game match in last year's SSAC championship contest.

Shorter's last win in the series came in the 2007 SSAC Tournament. The Lady Hawks defeated Lee in that tournament en route to their first-ever SSAC Tournament crown.

Shorter, coming off its best season in program history in 2009 in which the team won a record 27 matches, is off to a great start in 2010 after dominating the Mountain Madness field in Tennessee last Friday and Saturday.

Seniors Katie Van Hofwegen and Ashlie Stewartson were named to the All-Tournament team with Van Hofwegen claiming Most Valuable Player honors.

Van Hofwegen, who ranks second all-time in career digs at Shorter, posted 54 digs over the weekend to give her 1,154 for her career. She also recorded three aces, giving her 134 for her career and moving her just 14 aces behind Kayla Rollins for most all-time in Shorter history.

This is the first game for either team in the newly formed SSAC East Division. The SSAC added six schools to its membership following the 2009-10 academic year, forcing a two-division format beginning this season.

Lee and Shorter were picked to finish one and two, respectively, in the league according to the conference's preseason poll.
