No. 16 Lady Flames upset 11th-ranked Women's Tennis

ROME -- The Shorter University women's tennis team nearly rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles competition, but fell just short in a narrow 5-4 loss to 16th-ranked Lee University in a Southern States Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex.

The Lady Hawks, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, lost for just the second time this season and dropped to 11-2 overall and 2-2 in the SSAC.

Lee improves to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the league and now overtakes the Lady Hawks for third in the SSAC East Division standings.

Shorter's only win in doubles play came at No. 2, where Danielle Monteith and Nienke Van Staveren scored an 8-3 victory.

Candice Laurent, Emma deBeaucoudrey and Monteith claimed hard-fought three-set victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but Lee came back to win the final three singles matches, including a marathon match at No. 4 singles that went to Lee's Emily Orist by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Shorter's women wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 23 when they host SSAC rival and fourth-ranked Auburn University-Montgomery at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex in a 2 p.m. match.
