Shorter's Munson, Womble named Louisville Slugger All-Americans
2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NAIA All-American Team
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Senior Libby Munson and sophomore Jessica Womble have been named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NAIA Softball All-American Teams according to an announcement made by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last week.
Munson and Womble were both selected to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA East Region First Team two weeks ago. Both players were also named to the All-Southern States Athletic Conference squad and helped lead the Lady Hawks to first place in Pool E and a berth in bracket play at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship last week.
This latest NFCA All-America selection is the second for Munson, the most decorated softball player in Shorter history, who was first named an NFCA All-American after her freshman season in 2008.
Munson earned second team NFCA All-America honors this time around. The Suwanee, Ga., native ends her career as the only four-time NAIA All-American in Shorter softball history after she was named to the NAIA All-America second team on May 26.
Munson holds just about every all-time pitching and hitting record at Shorter.
On the rubber, where she was arguably the most dominant pitcher in the SSAC during her tenure, Munson won 105 career games in 147 appearances, finishing with a record of 105-24. The 105 wins are the most ever by any Shorter pitcher, as are her 46 career shutouts, 788 career strikeouts and 820.2 innings pitched.
She posted a career ERA of 1.30 -- also the best all-time -- and set school records with 29 wins and a 0.82 ERA in 2010. Munson finished 27-7 with a 1.32 ERA and 157 strikeouts this season on her way to SSAC Divisional Pitcher of the Year honors.
At the plate, Munson was just as productive. She departs Shorter as its all-time leader in at-bats (802), hits (288), doubles (68) and RBI (174). Munson hit .359 for her career and as a senior in 2011, had one of her best seasons ever batting .371 with 41 RBI and team-best 17 two-baggers.
She also swiped a career-high 11 bases while hitting three triples -- the only three triples in her illustrious career.
Womble continued to establish herself as one of Shorter's best all-around players in her second season with the Lady Hawks and for her efforts, was honored with a first team NFCA All-America nod.
Womble had one of the best single seasons in Shorter history, setting Shorter single season records with a .442 batting average and seven triples, a number that led the SSAC and ranked sixth in the country.
The Loganville, Ga., native is already Shorter's all-time leader with 11 triples and ranks third all-time with 42 stolen bases after swiping 18 in 20 attempts this season.
Womble belted three homers and drove in 43 runs in 2011. She also hit eight doubles and boasted a slugging percentage of .622 while batting second in the Shorter lineup.
The Lady Hawks have placed six players on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America Team over the past five years -- Munson twice, Womble, Jessica Sanders in both 2007 and 2008 and Tiffany Adams in 2010.
