Women's Soccer drops 3-1 decision to No. 16 Embry-Riddle
By Matt Green
DAYTONA BEACH -- Aline Bez Tamiosso scored the first goal of her Shorter University career, but the Lady Hawks surrendered two goals early in the second half en route to a 3-1 loss to 16th-ranked Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach on Friday night.
Shorter drops to 0-2 on the season while Embry-Riddle, which had beaten NCAA Division I Stetson University 5-2 on Aug. 27, improves to 3-0 on the young season.
The Lady Hawks played relatively even with the Eagles for 45 minutes, but simply couldn't stay close enough in the second half to pose any real threat to the two-time defending Sun Conference champions.
Embry-Riddle led 1-0 at halftime thanks to Martine Olsen's strike in the 21st minute, but took a 2-0 lead and control of the match with a tally from Krizzy Menez just 1:29 into the second half.
Olsen added her second goal of the game and sixth of the season in the 69th minute to stake the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead that proved much to tall a task for Shorter to overcome.
Bez Tamiosso, a highly-touted striker from Brazil and Cowley Community College, put Shorter on the board in the 86th minute, but it was too little too late for a depleted Shorter side that was missing six starters due to injury.
A bit of good news for the Lady Hawks -- sophomore Jessica Wright returned to the lineup after missing last Saturday's opener against Montreat with a knee injury. Wright played all 90 minutes in her first real action in over a week.
Shorter is still without midfielders Helena Farinha and Cintia Lamas, who were injured in the Montreat match, but plan to return within the next two weeks. Defender Blair Fine, who is out indefinitely with concussion symptoms, and midfielder Carleigh Butcher, who will sit for at least a month while she recovers from surgery on her broken kneecap, are still on the mend.
Mary Kate Lollar and Samantha Stephens remain out for the season with torn anterior cruciate ligaments. Still, the Lady Hawks put up a fight against one of the premier programs in the South.
Bez Tamiosso led the way with the goal on three shots while Brandi Greenwald offered two shots for the Lady Hawks. Freshman Sofia Pacino saw her first action in goal in the final 20+ minutes of the match.
The Lady Hawks will try and get into the win column on Sunday, Sept. 4 when they take on Webber International in Daytona at 1 pm.
