Dulaney tabbed COY, six Lady Hawks named to All-NWLL squads
ROME -- Shorter University head women's lacrosse
coach Brittni Dulaney was named the 2011 National Women's Lacrosse
League Co-Coach of the Year to highlight a banner night for the
Lady Hawk lacrosse team at the league's awards banquet held in Rome
on Friday night.
Dulaney, in her first season with Shorter's first year program, shared top coach honors with Missouri Baptist University's Katie Rau, and joined a host of Shorter coaches who have earned their respective conference Coach of the Year awards in 2010-11.
Dulaney led the Lady Hawks to a 9-5 overall record and to the No. 4 seed in the NWLL Tournament. Shorter won five straight to open the season and went 2-3 in NWLL play.
Shorter had six players honored with All-Conference nods -- three on the first team and three on the second team.
Senior goalie Dandi Ammons, a native of Chelsea, Ala., and former All-Conference standout for the Lady Hawk softball team, earned first team accolades after leading the conference in saves with 172 and in save percentage at .548, all despite facing nearly double the amount of shots of any other goalie in the conference.
Freshmen Bianca Rojas and Desiree Watson-Isom also landed on the NWLL first team. Rojas was one of the Lady Hawks' top offensive options with 37 goals and 14 assists. She also scooped up 76 ground balls and won 29 draws while often serving as one of Shorter's best defenders from her midfield position.
Watson-Isom was widely considered the league's top one-on-one defender. She led the NWLL with 29 caused turnovers and picked up 62 ground balls. When Watson-Isom wandered into the offensive third, she put up seven goals and one assist.
Junior Whitney Dixe and freshmen Katie Ott and Rachel Skinner garnered second team All-NWLL nods.
Dixe led the league in goals with 53 while adding seven assists for 60 points. Ott netted 35 goals for the Lady Hawks and had 59 ground balls on the year while Skinner picked up steam as the season progressed, finishing with 36 goals and four assists at the time of All-Conference voting.
Missouri Baptist senior midfielder Amanda Sullivan was named the 2011 NWLL Player of the Year after leading all players in conference goals with 21 and in conference points with 25.
Tennessee Wesleyan College and its head coach Grant Kelam was honored as the 2011 NWLL regular season champion after earning the league's top seed in the tournament with a perfect 5-0 conference mark.
Shorter will take on third-seeded Missouri Baptist today at 10 a.m. in the NWLL third place game.
