KANSAS CITY -- The Shorter University women's golf team has taken over at No. 1 in the second edition of the NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Friday.

The Lady Hawks become the first Shorter team to acquire the nation's No. 1 ranking -- powered by a record-breaking fall season, the women's golf team opened the season at No. 2 in the country, the highest ranking ever for Shorter's women's golf program.

Shorter earned its first No. 1 ranking of the season after being awarded seven first-place votes for 361 total points. First-place nods were distributed throughout the rest of the top-five teams with No. 2 Oklahoma City picking up one, No. 3 California Baptist earning a pair, No. 4 British Columbia tallying three and No. 5 Bethel (Ind.) recording one.

Shorter is coming off a first-place finish at the SCAD Savannah Spring Invitational held at the Wilmington Island Club in Savannah, Ga., on March 29.

The Lady Hawks combined for a 315-303—618 and had a trio place among the top-seven individuals, taking third, fourth and seventh-place honors. The team title is the fourth overall in the 2010–11 season and the first of the spring.

Shorter has now placed first or second in its last 10 events.

The Lady Hawks return to action on April 17-19 when they begin the quest for an automatic bid into the 2011 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship by competing in the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships in Columbus, Ga., at the Columbus Country Club.

Shorter won an unaffiliated qualifying tournament last season to score an automatic berth into the national tournament.
