Game Notes: Women's Hoops travels to Southern Poly Monday

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The No. 23-ranked Shorter women's basketball team heads to Marietta on Monday, Feb. 13 for a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup with Southern Poly at 6 pm.

The Lady Hawks (20-5, 12-3 SSAC), winners of four straight, can wrap up the season sweep of the Lady Hornets with a win tomorrow night. Shorter defeated Southern Poly 70-48 on Jan. 19 at the Winthrop-King Centre.

Shorter is coming off a 72-45 win over Brenau on Saturday afternoon, a victory that dealt head coach Vic Mitchell and his program a fifth straight 20-win season. The Lady Hawks are coming off a 24-win campaign in 2010-11 and could tie that win total with four wins in their final five regular season games.

Southern Poly is one year removed from winning the SSAC Tournament championship and making a second straight appearance in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship. The Lady Hornets (5-20, 3-11) began the season with 10 straight losses and have struggled to replace graduated All-America post Marisa Stotler, among others.

Shorter placed four players in double figures in the first meeting between the teams. Robyn Foster led the way with 16 points, Lindsey Crawford added 12 and Shelby Farrer and Kelly Ellison chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Hawks pulled away for a comfortable win.

A win for the Lady Hawks on Monday moves Shorter one step closer to locking up the East Division's No. 2 seed for the upcoming SSAC Tournament. Emmanuel, which split with Shorter this season, is currently three games back of Shorter in the standings with four conference games remaining. The Lady Hawks still have a date with division leader and No. 4-ranked Lee remaining on the schedule.
