Women's Hoops places four on CoSIDA Academic All-District squad
By Matt Green and Blair Hooper
ROME – The Shorter University women’s basketball program had four student-athletes voted onto the CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-District team according to a release by the organization last week.
Seniors Allison Danner, Kelly Ellison and Brittney Smith were joined by sophomore Lindsey Crawford as Academic All-District honorees for the College Division of District 2. All four student-athletes are now eligible for consideration for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team.
Shorter’s four Academic All-District winners were well deserved.
Danner, a senior out of Roswell, Ga., boasts a 3.60 grade point average as a Psychology major. A two-time Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic selection, Danner is averaging a career-best 7.7 points and 2.3 rebounds a game this season and is a career 36.8 percent 3-point shooter.
Ellison, also a two-time Academic All-SSAC pick, carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. An NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2010-11 – the same year she was named both the NAIA National Emil S. Liston Award winner and the SSAC Female Honor Student-Athlete – Ellison is a two-time NAIA All-American on the court, where she became Shorter’s all-time leader in assists earlier this year. The Columbus native is averaging career-highs in points (11.3), assists (6.7), rebounds (4.1) and steals (2.4) this season and needs just 70 points to surpass 1,000 for her career.
Smith, also a two-time SSAC All-Academic selection and NAIA Scholar-Athlete last season, has a 3.59 GPA as a Business Administration major. Smith is enjoying a monster season for the Lady Hawks, posting a career-best 10.9 points and 8.3 rebounds a game while shooting 53 percent from the floor. A native of Decatur, Ala., Smith has a team-high three double-doubles on the season.
Crawford, a product of Leesburg, is a Communications major with a 3.76 GPA. A key reserve to start the season, Crawford has worked her way into the starting lineup this season and is putting up 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game – both career highs.
To be nominated for CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at his/her institution.
CoSIDA – College Sports Information Directors of America – began its Academic All-District program in the 1950s, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports and across all divisions.
Currently, CoSIDA honors Academic All-Americans in 12 sports.
