Shorter's Ellison picks up SSAC Player of the Week nod

ATLANTA – Shorter University senior point guard Kelly Ellison has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week league officials announced on Monday.

Ellison, a native of Columbus, helped the No. 21-ranked Lady Hawks to a 1-1 record this past week by averaging 21.5 points, 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals. The honor is the first of the season for Ellison and the second in her Shorter career.

Ellison turned in two outstanding performances as Shorter topped Southern Wesleyan on Thursday night and fell on the road to Emmanuel in overtime on Saturday.

Against the Warriors, Ellison finished with a team-high 14 points and seven assists while adding four steals to lead Shorter to a 75-48 victory. Two days later, Ellison poured in a career-high 29 points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists as the Lady Hawks fell 95-86 in overtime to the Lions.

For the week, Ellison went 5-for-12 from 3-point range and made 12 of 13 from the foul line.

On the season, Ellison paces Shorter in scoring, assists and steals. Her 13.4 points per game are a career-high as are her 6.9 assists and 2.4 steals a game. Ellison is also pulling down a career-best 4.5 rebounds a night, and with 427 career assists in only 80 games, Ellison continues to add to her assist total that ranks No. 1 on Shorter's all-time assists list.

Ellison and the Lady Hawks are back in action this evening against SSAC East Division rival Brenau. Tip off for tonight’s game is set for 6 pm.
