By Blair Hooper
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 2-ranked Shorter University men's cross country team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday to compete in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas.
The Hawks placed 15th out of 32 teams, beating out NCAA Division I team Louisiana State. Beating LSU wasn't enough for Shorter, however, as the Hawks had their hopes set on beating the NAIA's No. 1-ranked squad, Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles bested the Hawks by 274 points as Shorter finished with a total of 435 points.
"It was not a great day for us as a team, but we did have some great individual performances," said head coach Jay Stephenson. "At the end [of the race] the general consensus was we didn't do as well as we hoped, but now we know what we need to do."
Shorter's Daniel Sorenson crossed the finish line in 72nd overall with a time of 31:21, followed by Eliud Ng'etich in 83rd place with a time of 31:33. Carlos Perez rounded out the Hawks top three finishers with a time of 31:53 to take 97th overall.
The Hawks averaged a time of 32:00 on the 10K course with a total time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The Hawks compete next on Oct. 29 in Rome, Ga., at the 12k Tempo.
