Wrestling announces hire of Joe Henson as assistant coach

By Matt Green

ROME -- Shorter University head wrestling coach Josh Henson announced today the hiring of Joe Henson as a graduate assistant for the Hawks' second-year wrestling program.

Joe Henson, the twin brother of Josh, comes to Shorter after spending seven years as an assistant coach at American University in Washington, D.C.

At American, Henson was a driving force behind the wrestling program's rise to national prominence. During Henson's tenure, American produced its first national champion, its first NCAA All-Americans -- Henson was responsible for the development of AU All-Americans Muzaffar Abdurakhma, Mike Cannon and Josh Glenn -- and a program-best fifth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Wrestling National Championship.

In addition to his time at American, Henson also spent one year with the Campbell wrestling program, where he aided in the development of East Region champion Parker Burns, who was Campbell's first national qualifier in seven years.

As a collegian, Henson qualified for the NCAA Championships four times while attending both the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Nebraska.

A 2001 graduate of Penn, Henson was a two-time place-winner at the EIWA Championships. During the 2001 tournament, he took third place and in his senior campaign Henson narrowly missed capturing a championship when he took second to Jesse Jantzen of Harvard. For his performance during his senior year, Henson earned the Robert G. Allman Most Inspirational Award.

Henson began his collegiate career at Nebraska where he was a two-year letterwinner, a two-time Nationals Qualifier and a Big 12 runner-up. In his four year career, Henson amassed over 100 wins.

Henson also accomplished much away from the wrestling mat during college, twice earning Academic All-America. Henson graduated from Penn in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
