Chelimo, Harvey capture final MSC Track & Field weekly honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Shorter University's Paul Chelimo is the Mid-South Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week and teammate Robert Harvey is the MSC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

The weekly conference honor is the second of the season for Chelimo while Harvey earns his first of the season. Chelimo also earned the track athlete of the week on April 4.

Chelimo won a pair of individual events and helped the Shorter 4x800 relay team to a first place finish at the Mid-South Conference Championships last Saturday earning track athlete of the week. The Iten, Kenya, freshman won the 15-man 1,500-meter run with a time 3 minutes and 53.17 seconds.

Chelimo followed with a win in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:55.80 to earn double all-conference honors for his finishes. He ran the second leg in his only relay appearance to help the team win with a time of 7:54.66.

Harvey won the men's shot put and discus throws at the MSC Championships to earn field athlete of the week. The Dacula, Ga., freshman won the shot put by more than five feet with a throw of 50-6 3/4 feet (15.41m).

Harvey joined Chelimo as a double all-conference performer after winning the discus with a throw or 144-5 feet (44.03m). He captured the conference discus title by more than seven feet over his nearest competitor.

Chelimo and Harvey helped the Hawks to their fourth straight MSC Championship title.

This week's honors are the last men's track & field conference weekly awards of the 2011 season.
