No. 10 Men's Tennis tops North Georgia in 2012 season opener

By Matt Green

ROME – The 10th-ranked Shorter University men's tennis team captured four of six singles matches en route to a 5-4 victory over NCAA Division II North Georgia College & State University on Thursday afternoon at the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center.

Romain Lefevre, Romain Ferriera, Arturo Lifshitz and Florain Etienne posted victories in No. 2 through No. 5 singles, respectively to send the Hawks to a 1-0 start to the 2012 campaign.

Lefevre's win at No. 2 singles over North Georgia's Matthew Guida perhaps proved most vital. The Shorter freshman from Maisons Alfort, France defeated Guida in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the day's only three-setter.

Ferriera and Etienne teamed up to provide Shorter with its lone win in doubles competition. The freshman tandem, playing out of the No. 2 doubles slot, downed North Georgia's pair of Giovani Santos and Brandon Sloan, 8-4, as the Saints won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Shorter returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 when it plays host to a second straight NCAA Division II member, Columbus State University also of the Peach Belt Conference, at 2 pm at the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center.
