Rico's two strikes send St. Thomas past Soccer Hawks
By Matt Green
THOMASVILLE, Ga. -- St. Thomas striker Jhonathan Rico scored twice in the first half and the Bobcats withstood Shorter's dominance in possession to pull out a 2-0 victory over the Hawks at the 6th Annual Thomas University Invitational in Thomasville, Ga., on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks (3-2) outshot St. Thomas 14-10 and held an incredible 12-1 advantage on corner kicks, but simply couldn't solve Bobcats' keeper Adam Green, who finished with five saves to send Shorter to its second straight loss.
Rico's strikes came midway through the first half and the Hawks were unable to climb back into the game.
Garry Perks and Robert Ochieng recorded a team-high three shots each, but only five of Shorter's 14 attempts found the target as St. Thomas absored plenty of pressure from the Hawks. The shutout ended Perks' streak of having at least one goal through Shorter's first four matches and marks the first time this season that the Hawks were held without a goal.
Shorter closes out the Thomas Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4:30 pm against host Thomas.
