Ryan Edwards tabbed SSAC Defensive Player of the Week

By Matt Green

ATLANTA -- Shorter University junior goalkeeper Ryan Edwards has been selected as the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1, the league announced on Monday.

It is the second Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season for Edwards, who last picked up the award on Sept. 5.

Edwards, a native of Douglasville, Ga., led the Hawks to a 1-1 record last week, including a win over previously unbeaten and No. 5-ranked Belhaven University. Against Belhaven on Friday, Edwards recorded his second clean sheet of the season with the help of six saves as the Hawks outlasted the Blazers 1-0.

He followed up that showing with another excellent performance on Saturday against No. 12 William Carey, making four saves before a free kick in the 86th minute propelled the Crusaders past the Hawks 1-0.

On the season, Edwards has made 33 saves.

Edwards and the Hawks return to SSAC play on Thursday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., for an 8 pm ET kickoff against Faulkner University. Shorter returns home on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 3:30 pm tilt with Auburn University-Montgomery.
