Men's Soccer earns second straight NSCAA Team Academic Award

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Shorter University men's soccer team has been awarded the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award according to a release by the organization last week.

This honor marks the second straight year that the Hawks have earned the recognition.

Under the direction of head coach Josh Severns, Shorter boasted a team grade point average of 3.1 while also succeeding on the pitch.

The Hawks won 11 matches en route to earning the SSAC East Division No. 2 seed and advancing to the Southern States Athletic Conference semifinal round with a 3-2 win over No. 18 William Carey University. It was the second straight season in which Shorter posted double digit victories.

Shorter had six players earn SSAC All-Academic recognition: Sebastian Stihler, Sam Franz, Elliot Livesey, Stan Nizamutdinov, Preston Watson and Trae Zablan.

Stihler, a senior from Mannheim, Germany, highlights that group with his accomplishments both on and off the field.

The two-time SSAC Defensive Player of the Year who was named an NAIA and NSCAA All-American in 2009 and will most certainly regain the All-American title in 2010, closes out his career as a three-time SSAC All-Academic selection. Named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2009, Stihler is poised to repeat that feat in 2010.
