Guilford downs Shorter Men's Lacrosse, 14-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford College got five goals from Greg Nash and held Shorter University scoreless in two periods en route to a 14-4 victory over the Hawks in men's lacrosse action on Monday night in Greensboro, N.C.

Michael Matthews paced Shorter with two goals while Kyle Morris and Jarrad Hinds scored one goal apiece. The Hawks were outshot 44-22 by the Quakers (1-0), who also forced 26 Shorter turnovers.

The Hawks (1-2) fell behind 5-0 after the first quarter. Hinds scored 52 seconds into the second quarter to draw Shorter to within 5-1, but Shorter never got closer than four goals the rest of the way. The Quakers led 8-2 at halftime and outscored Shorter 3-0 in the third quarter to all but put the game away.

Jordan Butz scooped up a team-high seven ground balls and dished out Shorter's only assist. Erik Carson made 11 saves in 51:37 of work for Shorter in goal.

The Hawks will take a week away from competition before welcoming NCAA Division II Lees-McRae to Ben Brady Field for their 2012 home opener on Feb. 24. Face off is set for 6 pm.
