Lax closes out inaugural season with 23-4 win over Reinhardt
ROME -- Kyle Van Kauwenberg scored a team-high
seven goals to lead Shorter University to an easy 23-4 victory over
Reinhardt University in the Hawks' final game of their inaugural
season.
Four other Hawks posted hat tricks -- Cole Tesh, Mike Matthews, Marc Morgan and Kyle Morris recorded three goals apiece -- as Shorter closed out the 2011 season with a 7-3 overall record.
Shorter also completed the season perfect at home, improving to 4-0 within the friendly confines of Ben Brady Field.
The Hawks jumped on the Eagles (3-9) early and often en route to the victory, getting an entire team effort that was arguably Shorter's most complete performance of the season.
Shorter scored the game's first four goals and closed the first half on a 9-0 run to lead 13-1 at the break.
Van Kauwenberg had five of Shorter's first half goals while Tesh racked up a goal and four assists before halftime.
Channing Hoyt and Max Thomas notched the first two goals of the second half to pull Reinhardt to within 13-3, but the Hawks responded with six unanswered goals -- two by Tesh -- to extend their lead to 19-3.
Tesh finished with five helpers and nine ground balls for the Hawks, who outshot Reinhardt 46-24 and held a 59-52 edge in ground balls.
Shorter's Rick O'Neal had a pair of goals and eight ground balls, Kyle Boyd caused four turnovers and had six ground balls and Cody Posavec was strong on the defensive end with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jeff Gerlitz got the win in goal for Shorter with four saves in 37 minutes. Matt Eason entered in relief of Gerlitz between the pipes and let in just one goals while making five saves.
Sean Feeley and Michael McDowell also scored for the Hawks, who forced 43 turnovers by Reinhardt.
