Van Kauwenberg, Hawks down Georgia Southern 16-6

ROME -- Kyle Van Kauwenberg scored six goals and added an assist to help Shorter University score a 16-6 victory over Georgia Southern in men's lacrosse action at Ben Brady Field on a soggy Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks won their second straight game and improved to 6-3. Georgia Southern, a member of the MCLA, fell to 1-5 overall on the season.

Shorter dominated statistically throughout the contest and used a 10-4 second half to put the Eagles away.

The Hawks held a 46-30 advantage in shots and 55-42 edge in ground balls. Shorter went 3-for-4 in extra man opportunities and got a strong performance from its defense, which forced 24 turnovers from the Eagles and played solid in front of Shorter's winning goalie, Jeff Gerlitz.

Shorter scored five of the game's first six goals and held a 6-2 lead at the half. Shorter opened the second half on a 5-2 run to take an 11-4 lead, and after Georgia Southern closed to within 12-6, the Hawks proceeded to score the final four goals of the game to finish off their guests.

Van Kauwenberg paced Shorter offensively with his six tallies. Mike Matthews added a hat trick, Cole Tesh scored two goals, dished out three assists and scooped up a team-high 11 ground balls and Marc Morgan had a pair of goals and a pair of assists in the win.

The Hawks will host their final game of the inaugural 2011 season on Wednesday, March 30 when they welcome Reinhardt University to Ben Brady Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
