Men's Lax scores 9-7 victory over LaRoche College in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH -- Kyle Van Kauwenberg posted a hat trick and Kyle Morris and Michael Matthews scored two goals apiece as Shorter University topped LaRoche College 9-7 in men's lacrosse action on Monday night in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Hawks improved to 4-1 on the season while LaRoche dropped to 1-3. It was the first game on a four-game Spring Break road trip for the Hawks, which continues this evening at 6 p.m. against Wheeling Jesuit in West Virginia.

On Monday, Shorter had to rally from an early deficit to score its third straight win.

LaRoche scored the first three goals of the game, but the Hawks answered with four straight strikes -- the first three from Kauwenberg and the final goal from Marc Morgan -- to take a 4-3 lead with 7:30 left until halftime.

Shorter went into halftime up 5-4 after Morris scored an unassisted goal with 2:01 remaining in the second period.

LaRoche regained the lead early in the second half as Dustin Reykdal, who led the Red Hawks with three goals, scored the first two goals of the third period to put the hosts up 6-5.

But Shorter responded once again with goals from Cole Tesh, Matthews and Morris to take an 8-6 lead and Matthews struck the final blow with a goal in the final five minutes as the Hawks never relinquished their advantage.

LaRoche held an advantage in shots (40-28) and ground balls (50-32), but committed nine penalties.

Jeff Gerlitz made 17 saves in goal for the Hawks and Rick O'Neal scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
