Men's Golf posts second place finish at Coastal Georgia Invite

ST. SIMONS ISLE, Ga. -- Junior Tyler Steptoe placed seventh overall thanks to a 1-under 71 in Tuesday's second round to help Shorter University record a second place team finish at the Coastal Georgia Men's Invitational held at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Steptoe shot an opening round 76 on Monday, but bounced back with his under par round on Tuesday to register a two-day total of 147 and finish as one of two Hawks in the top 10 of the 13-team, 82-athlete event. Freshman Patric Sundlof placed ninth overall with a two-round total of 72-76-148.

The Hawks were four shots better as a team on Tuesday and finished 303-299-602 to end up in a tie with the University of South Carolina-Beaufort and tournament host Coastal Georgia in second place. Darton Community College (581) took the team title while North Georgia (605) placed fifth.

Freshman Robert Prior, sophomore Matt Youmans and freshman Oliver Larsson rounded out Shorter's top five. Prior (77-74-151) finished in a tie for 14th overall, Youmans (77-76-153) placed 24th and Larsson (78-76-154) was tied for 30th after the final 18 holes.

Shorter's Ethan Lambert and Gabriel Cassinelli also competed in St. Simons Island. Lambert, a sophomore, and Cassinelli, a freshman, turned in identical two-round totals of 158 to finish in a tie for 41st place.

Darton's Joe Sakulpolphaisan shot an 11-under 133 to take home medalist honors. He won by nine strokes over runner-up Mark Phillips of USC-Beaufort.

The Hawks will take several weeks off before returning to the course on March 5 and 6 as they compete in the Berry College Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Course.
