GAME NOTES

ROME -- Fresh off a 42-10 upset of then No. 20-ranked Webber International in its 2011 season opener last Saturday, the newly ranked Shorter University football squad will host the University of Pikeville on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1:30 pm at Historic Barron Stadium.

Shorter, which appeared at No. 21 in the latest NAIA Football Top 25 Coaches Poll released on Monday, squares off for the sixth time with Pikeville, which is off to a 2-0 start under new head coach Dudley Hilton after a disappointing 2-8 campaign one year ago.

The Hawks (1-0) lead the all-time series 3-2 after breaking a deadlock in the series with a 49-14 victory over the Bears in Kentucky last year, Shorter's third straight win over Pikeville. The Hawks have outscored Pikeville 134-37 in those three victories.

In last season's meeting, Shorter rolled up 468 yards rushing -- the third-highest single-game rushing total in school history -- while scoring 29 points in the first quarter and forcing Pikeville quarterback Trevor Hoskins into five turnovers.

Antwon Appleton paced Shorter offensively with 63 yards and a touchdown on four carries in addition to 124 return yards. Mason Strickland led the Hawks' defense with five tackles.

Saturday will serve as SPLOST Appreciation Day as well as Mal's Pals and Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. Fans who show their voter registration card will receive two free game tickets and fans will have opportunities to learn more about Mal's Pals while donating financially or giving blood to the cause.

Gates open at 11:30 am.
