ROME – Shorter University placed nine football student-athletes on the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team according to a release from CoSIDA last week.
Derik Cooper, Josh Dorminy, Kenny Foster, Landon Littlejohn, Nick Newborn, Michael Ozment, Ben Peterson, Sam Robison and Collin Wooddy were selected as Academic All-District honorees for the College Division of District 2 and all nine student-athletes are now eligible for consideration on CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams.
Shorter football athletes represented 75 percent of all District 2 College Division selections.
Cooper, a senior out of Flintstone, Ga., carries a 3.68 GPA in Accounting as a member of the Bridge program for the Master of Accounting degree. A four-year starter as Shorter’s long snapper, Cooper is one of only two players in program history to be named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete two times (2009, 2010).
Dorminy, a senior offensive lineman from Darien, Ga., boasts a 3.81 GPA in Education. Dorminy is a three-time Academic All-Mid-South selection and was selected as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the first time last season.
Foster, a sophomore fullback out of Canton, Ga., has a 3.56 GPA in Sports Management. After leading the Hawks in rushing as a freshman in 2010, Foster ranked second on the team in rushing this season with 419 yards and four TDs.
Offensive linemen Littlejohn, Newborn, Ozment, Peterson and Robison not only excelled in the trenches for the Hawks, but also in the classroom as evidenced by their Academic All-District selections.
Littlejohn, a senior from LaFayette and a two-time Mid-South All-Academic choice, carries a 3.37 GPA in Business; Newborn, a senior from Cartersville that is a two-time All-Conference and Mid-South All-Academic selection, has a 3.47 GPA in History and Political Science; junior Silver Creek, Ga., native Ozment holds a 3.53 GPA in Sports Management; Peterson, a sophomore out of Marietta, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA in Education; and Robison, a senior from Bremen and two-time Mid-South All-Academic performer as well as a 2010 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honoree, posted a 3.86 GPA in Mathematics Education.
Wooddy rounds out Shorter’s Academic All-District roster as the senior tight end out of Fayetteville, Ga., caught three passes – all for touchdowns – in 2011 and boasts a 3.56 GPA in Sports Management.
To be nominated for CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District and All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at his/her institution. Voting for the Capital One Academic All-America teams ends Nov. 15.
CoSIDA – College Sports Information Directors of America – began its Academic All-America program in the 1950s, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports and across all divisions. Currently, CoSIDA honors Academic All-Americans in 12 sports.
