GAME NOTES

BABSON PARK, Fla. -- Shorter opens the 2011 football season on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a trip to Babson Park, Fla., to take on 20th-ranked Webber International University at 1:30 pm.

The Hawks, entering their seventh season as a program under head coach Phil Jones, are 2-1 all-time time against the Warriors, who are coming off a stunning 37-29 upset loss at UVA-Wise last Saturday.

Shorter broke a 1-1 deadlock in its series with Webber International with a 42-14 rout of the then 22nd-ranked Warriors at Barron Stadium last season, a game in which Shorter set school records with 534 rushing yards and 547 yards of total offense. Shorter also had three players eclipse the 100-yard mark for the first time in program history, including this year's sophomore fullback tandem of Kenny Foster and C.J. Scott, who combined for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2010.

The Hawks are 3-3 all-time in season openers, but are looking to break a string of three straight opening day defeats.

Shorter fell to NCAA Division I Western Carolina in 2008 and dropped decisions to NCAA Division II powers Lenoir-Rhyne and West Alabama in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Shorter has not taken on an NAIA institution in a season opener since its inaugural season in 2005 when the Hawks were defeated on the field by Webber International 16-9 -- a game that was eventually awarded to Shorter via forfeit and stands as the first win in program history.
