Game Notes: Football Hawks welcome Webber International

Shorter Football Game Notes

ROME, Ga. - Shorter University takes a one week respite from Mid-South Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 30 as it plays host to No. 22-ranked Webber International University at 1:30 p.m. at Barron Stadium.

Saturday's game marks the Hawks' first game at Barron since Oct. 2 when Shorter upended Faulkner University 31-10. Shorter (4-4) is 2-0 this season when playing in its newly renovated facility.

Shorter's unblemished mark at home will be put to the test on Saturday, however, as Webber International enters the contest with a 5-3 record that includes wins over several formidable opponents, including Mid-South East Division leader and perennial NAIA power Georgetown College. The Warriors beat Georgetown 27-20 in their second game of the season.

Webber entered the NAIA Top 25 Poll after that victory and has been a staple in the ranking ever since. The Warriors were No. 17 in last week's poll before dropping a 35-23 decision to Huntingdon College last Saturday during Homecoming Weekend at Webber.

The all-time series between the Hawks and Warriors is tied at 1-1, although the teams have not played since 2006. That year, Webber International pulled out a 13-6 victory over the Hawks in Babson Park, Fla.

Shorter hosted Webber International in its first game in program history in 2005, and although the Hawks initially lost the game on the field, they were later awarded the victory due to an ineligible Webber player, a game that goes down as the first win in school history.

Shorter is hosting two events on Saturday as a supplement to the game.

Saturday is Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Shorter, and the school will recognize several breast cancer survivors prior to kickoff while also providing fans with chances to donate towards breast cancer research and learn more about opportunities to help the fight against cancer.

Saturday is also Shorter Athletics' annual Championship Saturday, where Shorter's 10 national championship qualifying teams from 2009-10 will be recognized along with the Shorter baseball team, which won the 2009-10 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Award.
