SALINA, Kan. -- This past weekend, three Shorter University football players had the opportunity to strap on their pads one last time.

Seniors Garrett Hochstetler, T.C. Jay and Grant Myers were invited to play in the Fifth Annual Victory Sports Network Senior Classic at Salina Stadium in Salina, Kan., on April 30.

The trio joined approximately 110 senior football players from NAIA teams across the nation to play in the game, which has gained national prominence since its start in 2007. The game is regularly attended by scouts from the National Football League (NFL), Arena Football League (AFL), Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Indoor Football League.

Hochstetler, Jay and Myers suited up for the Nationals squad and saw plenty of playing time while helping lead the Nationals to a 17-13 win -- the fourth time in the five-year event that the Nationals have defeated the Americans.

Jay, a wide receiver, caught two passes for 11 yards in the win. Linebackers Hochstetler and Myers recorded three tackles between them, contributing to a staunch defensive effort that held the Americans to 16 rushing yards.

More important than individual accomplishments, the three Hawks enjoyed the opportunity to play the game they love one more time while closing out their playing careers with a win.

The trio helped bring Shorter's football program into national prominence.

Each was a member of the 2008 team that caputured the school's first-ever Mid-South Conference football championship. With Hochstetler, Jay and Myers on the roster, Shorter enjoyed three winning seasons out of four and made the program's first appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series in 2008.
