Football expected to make big moves on National Signing Day
ROME -- Since its inaugural season six years ago,
the Shorter University football program has built itself on the
foundation of relationships.
That philosophy has developed strong bonds between Shorter’s players, its coaches and the Lord, resulting in success for the Hawks on and off the field.
When tomorrow’s National Signing Day arrives, the Shorter figures to enjoy the fruits of that philosophy, as the Hawks are expected to unveil one of the most talented classes of recruits it has ever produced in the short history of the program.
“For us, it’s all about developing a relationship as coaches,” Shorter’s recruiting coordinator Paul Pitts said about the philosophy the coaching staff has executed in recruiting. Spearheaded by the efforts of Pitts, Shorter is expected to ink approximately 20 players that have been on the coaching staff’s radar for a year.
“This year’s Signing Day culminates a process that we started last March when we got out into the high schools,” Pitts added. “The majority of the kids we recruited and hope to sign Wednesday were those same kids that we first contacted last March.
“This year showed that when you approach recruiting as a year-round deal, you can find high-caliber kids and they can see what we’re all about.”
Shorter had several critical needs that it set out to address and Pitts is confident that the Hawks will have successfully filled those voids when everything is said and done on Wednesday.
“Defense was our key priority,” Pitts said. “We were especially looking for help on the defensive line and in the secondary. We also knew we had to find a quarterback on offense.”
The complete list of Shorter’s 2011 signees will be released on Wednesday afternoon.
While tomorrow is most publicized recruiting day of the year, recruits still have the opportunity to sign with the Hawks throughout the spring and into the early summer months.
“We’re excited about our recruiting class,” said Pitts. “Now all we have to do is sit by the fax machine and wait.”
