Shorter announces addition of club bowling, cycling for 2011-12

ROME
– Shorter University Director of Athletics Bill Peterson announced today the university’s plans to start three new club sport programs in the fall of 2011.

The first three programs of Shorter’s new club sports initiative – men’s bowling, women’s bowling and cycling – are slated to begin competition during the 2011-12 academic year.

“We are very excited about this new era in Shorter Athletics,” said Peterson. ”We think that club sports will have a great impact on our student body as a whole and we are eager to get started.”

Each team will have scholarship money available through the athletic department and will compete against other club teams across the country.

In addition to naming the new sports, Peterson also introduced the names of the individuals charged with leading each program.

Shorter assistant football coach Paul Pitts and assistant men’s basketball coach Tyler Murray will serve as head coaches of the men and women’s bowling teams, respectively.

Shorter’s assistant director of athletic operations Joey Taylor will work under Pitts as the men’s bowling assistant while one of the athletic department’s administrative assistants, Cristy Pak, will team up with Murray as the women’s bowling assistant.

Powell Fulton, who has served as Shorter’s assistant cross country and track and field coach since July of 2008, will tackle duties as cycling head coach. Rochelle Black, one of Shorter’s assistant track and field coaches, will aid Fulton as the cycling assistant.

“We have picked some of the best and brightest within our athletic department to get these programs started,” said Peterson. “We are really enthusiastic about their capabilities and what they will do for each of these programs.”

Recruitment efforts for all three teams are already underway.
