By Matt Green
ATLANTA -- Shorter University forward Walter Hill has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance during the week of Jan. 23-29, conference officials announced Monday.
Hill, a 6-5 junior out of Gainesville, Ga., averaged 19.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists in leading the No. 1-ranked Hawks to three wins last week over cross-town rival Berry College and SSAC foes Brewton-Parker College and Lee University.
Against Berry on Jan. 23, Hill notched his team-high fourth double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds as Shorter routed the Vikings 88-44 at the Winthrop-King Centre. He then put up 17 points, six rebounds and four assists in Shorter's 97-70 win over Brewton-Parker on Jan. 26.
Hill wrapped up his impressive week with a show-stopping performance on the road at No. 17-ranked Lee. He shot 9-for-16 on his way to 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in Shorter's 80-77 overtime win over the Flames as the Hawks dealt Lee its first home loss of the season and continued on as the NAIA's lone unbeaten team.
For the year, Hill leads Shorter and ranks third in the SSAC in scoring at 18.1 points a game. He also paces the Hawks in steals (1.9) and blocks (0.7) per game.
Hill and the Hawks (22-0, 12-0) head to Atlanta on Thursday for a non-conference tilt with Point University at 7 pm. Shorter continues conference play on Saturday with a road date against Southern Wesleyan in Central, S.C., at 4 pm.
