SU Cheer Hawks to perform regional routines Monday night

By Matt Green

ROME -- The Shorter University competitive cheerleading program will perform at halftime of the Shorter University men's basketball game against Truett-McConnell College on Monday night, Jan. 30, in preparation of the Mid-South Regional Cheerleading Championships.

The Cheer Hawks will feature both their small and large co-ed squads tomorrow evening. Both teams will head to Campbellsville, Ky., on Saturday, Feb. 4 to battle for an NAIA bid to the NCA Collegiate Cheerleading National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., later this spring.

This is the first year that Shorter has sponsored a small co-ed squad. Shorter has won three consecutive NCA national championships in the All-Girl II Intermediate division, but this year, will try and qualify two co-ed teams for a chance to capture a first-ever NAIA national championship in cheerleading.

Shorter's large co-ed team placed second in the nation by a fraction of a point at last year's NAIA national championship event in Daytona -- the first time that the NAIA had sponsored a national championship in cheerleading.

The men's basketball game tips off at 8 pm tomorrow night. The competitive cheerleading squads will perform at approximately 8:30 pm.
