2015 SHORTER INVITATIONAL RESULTS
ROME, Ga. – Top finishes and new records came fast and furious Saturday at Barron Stadium when the Shorter Hawks and Lady Hawks track team turned in an impressive showing at the 4
th annual Shorter Invitational.
By the time the day-long meet came to an end, Shorter athletes and even a former standout rolled up 12 first place finishes and had picked up top three performances in 21 events during the program's first home meet of the season.
The highlight of the day for the Hawks came in the two hurdle events as
Del'Quan Campbell won the 400 hurdles with a meet record 54.03 seconds while
Supun Randeniya bested the field in the 110 high hurdlers with a winning time of 15.17.
Lane Fletcher emerged with the win in the pole vault clearing the bar at 12 feet, 9.5 inches, the 4x400 relay team blistered the field with a meet record 48.88 and
Cole Rice led a parade of four Hawks across the finish line in the 400 with a meet record time of 48.88.
Returning to Barron for the first time since his stellar career at Shorter ended a year ago was
Kirk Wilson, who didn't disappoint the crowd as he swept the two sprints, posting a 10.57 in the 100 and cruising to the win in the 200 in 21.61.
Following on the heels of Rice across the finish line in the 400 was
Gregory Roachford, Jr. (49.08),
Wake Roberds (49.50) and Willy Dorcin (49.97.)
At the Riverside Throws Center,
Daniel Alexis picked up a pair of places taking a second in the discus (141-11) and a third in the hammer throw (149-7);
Josiah Jenkins was third in the 800 (1:55.28),
Joshua Jenkins was second in the 3000 steeplechase (9:42.780); the 4x100 relay team picked up a second place (42.25); and
Alfred Chelanga, red-shirted for the outdoor season and entered as an unattached runner took third place in the Invitational Open Mile in 4:25.60.
The Lady Hawks combined to secure six first places, three of them resulting in new meet marks.
In the 200,
Ayana Walker hit the outdoor track for the first time since closing out the indoor season becoming Shorter's first-ever NCAA national champion – she won the Division II 400 national indoor title – leading the pack with a new record of 24.69.
In the jumping pits, Shorter won both the triple jump and long jump in record style as
Yamara Robinson established a new triple standard unleashing a leap of 38-6 to claim the win and Portia Anderson took over the record in the long jump with an 18-11 effort.
Adding to the list of firsts for the Lady Hawks was
Emily Buwalda in the 800 (2:14.74),
Cynia Clark took top honors in the hammer throw (157-4) and the 4x100 relay team stopped the clock at 46.95 to break the tape first.
Two more Lady Hawks made it a one-two finish for Shorter in two events with
Anelise Aldana finishing second in the triple jump (38-0) and
Madison Sears was second in the hammer throw (152-11);
Portia McManis (14.85) and
Kryslynn Davidson (15.11) were second and third in the 100 hurdlers; and three athletes who competed in an unattached basis claimed third places finish –
Destiny Jenkins (5000, 18:26.50),
Nyasiah Mercado (400, 58.96) and
Yamara Robinson (long jump, 17-4.75.)
The team is back in action next weekend when it splits up to compete in two meets, traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to take part in the prestigious Florida Pepsi Relays and running in the Wofford Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C.
