Marie Mercer Lewis (Women's Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball)
Marie Mercer Lewis was a pioneer in women's sports at
Shorter earning nine varsity letters. Lewis competed for three
years as a member of the men's tennis team where she was a two-time
conference champion in 1974 and 1975 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Lewis was also a conference champion in 1975 at No. 3 doubles. In
1976 she competed at the NAIA Men's National Tournament and was the
captain of the volleyball team and MVP in 1976.
She was MVP, leading scorer, assist leader, most dedicated, and best defensive player all three years on the Lady Hawks' basketball team and tried out for the USA Women's Olympic team in 1975. Twice Lewis was named Outstanding College Athlete of America (1975-1976) and in 1977 was named Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Lewis played on the first women's tennis team in 1977 where she earned the Top Hustle Award and Best Doubles Award.
